Qualifications separate the professional from the well intentioned amateur. Even though we all know someone who owns a pair of pliers, we still prefer to use the services of a qualified dentist.
Nobody Likes Exams
Professionally recognised qualifications speak volumes about the person who holds them. They’re the result of dedicated study and practice, and of being able to demonstrate that the skills and knowledge acquired have been retained and understood. Nobody likes exams, but they’re still the most common way to assess the quality of an individual in a particular discipline.
Of course, experience plays a part too. Being able to translate classroom theory into a workable, robust and maintainable solution is a different type of skill. One that comes with time. There’s a Catch-22 dilemma here. To develop the expertise required, our engineers need to be practising and honing their skills. But until they have the necessary experience, they’re not permitted to do anything non-trivial with a customer’s IT.
Pro-Networks uses a three-tiered system to demarcate our engineers’ skill levels. The most senior engineers are level three. These are people like our highest qualified and most experienced project installation engineers. Our newest engineers are level one. As an engineer gains more qualifications, they are given more demanding work items. They’ll shadow more experienced engineers, and gradually transition to performing the tasks themselves with the senior engineers mentoring them less and less.
Judge an IT Company by Its Engineers
Any IT company is only as good as its engineers. We’re justifiably proud of our engineering team. Between them they have more Microsoft qualifications than most other IT support business in the region. And they’re not allowed to sit on their laurels, either. New products, emerging technologies and modern methodologies mean there is always another exam to prepare for, or a new certification to chase. Additionality, Microsoft has retired most “server” based certification in favour of “cloud” based certifications meaning our engineers are on the exam path again - refreshing and updating their existing certifications.
Most of the exams that our engineers take are related to Microsoft products, such as desktop and server operating systems, or Microsoft products such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Azure. We’re an accredited Microsoft partner after all, and the majority of systems we manage for our clients are Windows-based.
That doesn’t mean we ignore the alternatives, though. We have certifications in Apple products and applications, too. High-end network routers and firewall appliances also offer certifications, such as those from Cisco and SonicWall. So, naturally, we have SonicWall and Cisco-certified engineers in our team.
Ongoing Personal and Professional Development
Pro-Networks takes personal and professional development seriously. We want our engineering team to be the best they can be. We want them to get things right the first time, and to find solutions to issues as swiftly as possible. That means educating, mentoring and nurturing them. That’s a huge investment. We’ve heard the argument that if you do that, you’re just training them to go and get a job elsewhere. And yet, we have an enviably low staff turnover.
If qualifications are a measure of a professional, then perhaps the ability to retain those qualified professionals is a measure of their employer. We provide continual education and developmental challenges for our engineers. We’re happiest when they feel fulfilled, valued, and valuable.
